Ellen K. Sweeney, 101, of Marinette, passed away on Wednesday, June 25, 2014, at Bay Area Medical Center in Marinette. She was born on October 6, 1912, to the late John and Mary (Korn) Cance in Stanley, Wis.
  Ellen graduated from Stanley High School and went on to Teacher’s Training School. She taught First Grade for two years and then worked at The Falls Dairy in Stanley as a secretary for many years. On February 8, 1937, Ellen married James F. Sweeney at St. John’s Cathedral in Milwaukee. He preceded her in death on March 21, 1990. She was an active 4-H leader for many years, a member of the Happy Hour Homemakers Club, Victory Memorial Hospital Gray Ladies, and a member of Holy Family Parish of Stanley, where she was very involved, and Marinette. Ellen had resided in Stanley until 2002, when she moved to live near her daughter, Ruth.
  Ellen is survived by two daughters: Joan O’Brien of Holcombe, Wis. and Ruth Thielen of Marinette; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Cance of Stanley; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, James, she was preceded in death by three brothers: Edmund, Alex, and Robert Cance; sons-in-law: Ken O’Brien, Ed Swatzina and Mark Thielen and a grandson, Bob Phillippi.
  Friends may call at the Luther Home in Marinette on Saturday, June 28th from Noon until time of service. Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. Additional time of visitation will be held at Holy Family Parish in Stanley on Tuesday, July 1st from 10 a.m. until time of service. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. with Fr. William Felix officiating.
  Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Stanley.
