John E. (Jack) Kunesh, 80, of Columbia, SC, passed away Friday, June 6, 2014, at home under Hospice Care. He was born December 26, 1933, in Marinette, Wis., to James and Helen (Lesak) Kunesh.
John was graduated from Marinette High School in 1951.  He attended St. Norbert College in DePere, Wis., and was graduated with a BS degree from Purdue University School of Engineering and Technology. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, from 1952 to 1956. He was a member of the American Legion. John started his career in the circulation department of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, and the Indianapolis Star-News. He was Circulation Director at the Kingsport (TN) Times News. John owned his own businesses in Indianapolis for many years, including a cheese company and Big John’s Coffee Service. John married Joyce Schroeder in 1958, and lived with his family in Carmel, Ind. for many years, where he enjoyed attending all of his daughters’ theater, show choir and musical productions, and academic banquets. Having played football and been part of a football family, he especially enjoyed watching his son, Nick, and grandson, Kristopher, play high school and college football. He was also a Packer Backer, with stock in the company. John enjoyed cooking for his family as well as working in his large yard. His grandsons have
special memories of raking leaves with their Grandpa Jack. He was a natural athlete who enjoyed jogging and working out. John also enjoyed skiing with his wife Joyce, as well as swimming at Lake Michigan beaches. He also loved Bluegrass music and festivals. When John suffered kidney failure in 1997, his daughter Cynthia donated one of her kidneys. When that transplant became unsuccessful he received a cadaver kidney in 1999 which worked successfully to the end of his life. John attended church services with his wife at Memorial Chapel at Fort Jackson, SC, where he had many friends.
John is survived by his wife, Joyce; two daughters:  Suzanne (Griff) Wilhelm of Fort Myers, Fla. and her son, Eric Heba of Bowling Green, Ohio and Cynthia (Jeff) Pauloski of Indianapolis, Ind. and their sons: Kristopher and Patrick; son, Nicholas (Karen Buck) Kunesh of Alexandria, Va.;  brother, Dan Kunesh of Marinette, Wis.; sister, Lois Doffek of Brookfield, Wis.; and two sisters-in-law: Rose Kunesh of Green Bay, Wis. and Margie Kunesh of Marinette, Wis.   John was a hard-working, good, hardy soul, who brought his kids up with the saying “When it’s too tough for everyone else, it’s just right for me.” His grandson Patrick describes Grandpa Jack as “selfless, kind and loving.”  He will be missed.
A military service and above-ground entombment are planned for June 13 at the Field of Valor, Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis, Ind.
