HORTONVILLE, Wis. - Game on in the Bay Conference girls' golf race.

Denmark won a conference match again with a 189 Wednesday. Hortonville fired a 192 on its home course to place second. In its quest for a sixth straight conference title, Marinette settled for third with a 196.

"We're not playing that bad; they're playing better," Marinette coach Stephanie Haines said. "Hortonville snuck up on us. I'm kind of at a loss for words because I'm disappointed."

Meaghan Carney fired a medalist round of 38 to lead Denmark. Marinette's Abby Dufrane hit her tee shot out-of-bounds on the first hole at Grand View Golf Club.

"That kind of threw her off," Haines said.

Dufrane finished with a 5-over-par 40.

Kayla Thielen wanted to break 50 on her 16th birthday, and she did with a 49 for the Marines. Cassie Hilbert shot a 50, Lexi Bretl 57 and Liz Lang 59.

"Every one of them could've taken strokes off their score," Haines said. "I think they need to focus a little more and stop chatting so much. We can do it - we have to get everything in order."

There's some consolation in the fact that the Marines lost to Denmark and Hortonville on their home courses. Today, they'll play a match at River Island Golf Course in Oconto Falls.

"There are no excuses," the coach said. "We can play better than these teams. We just have to do it."

Alex Roman led the second-place Marinette junior varsity with a 57.
