JEFFERSON, Wis. - The Marinette Marine baseball team was itching to get out of its gym and outside for a ballgame or two.

Careful what you wish for.

The Marines lost a season-opening doubleheader 10-0 and 17-3 to Jefferson Saturday. Coming off a 21-7 Rock Valley North Conference co-championship, Jefferson is ranked No. 1 in the state in Division 2. The Eagles return 10 seniors - six who plan to play college baseball.

"So going in we knew we had our hands full," Marinette coach Dave Francour said. "They're loaded. We didn't play well. Obviously you could tell it was out first time outside."

Heath Renz and Jacob Nelson combined to throw a five-inning no-hitter in the first game. Marinette mounted a threat in its first at-bat when Caylubb Maske walked and Aaron Benson was hit by a pitch, but a fielder's choice and strikeout snuffed the threat.

Benson pitched the first two innings and allowed eight runs - four earned - on five hits with no walks and two strikeouts.

Tanner Johnson hit a leadoff double for Jefferson in the first, and Nick Schrader followed with an RBI double. Two hit batsmen and RBI singles by Nelson and Dan Ott finished the four-run inning.

A Schrader single, three infield errors and Renz's two-run double led to four runs in the second.

Nelson hit a two-run double in the fourth.

Sophomore Kevin Konyn pitched two innings, with two earned runs on three hits with one strikeout and no walks.

"Our pitchers at least threw strikes," Francour said. "Our pitchers aren't overpowering. We've got to play defense. We didn't play defense very well."

Alex Gressel pitched the first three innings of Game 2, and he had one strikeout and allowed five runs - four earned - on four hits.

Renz blasted a three-run homer for Jefferson in the first. Andy Branier added an RBI single in the third. In a seven-run fourth, Schrader singled in two runs and Rory Schlesher doubled in two runs. Ott added an RBI single and Garrett Ebert doubled in a run.

Marinette scored a run in the fourth when Maske drew a one-out walk and Benson doubled him home.

In the fifth, Luke Johnson and Konyn walked and scored on a Jimmy Jackimowicz single.

Maske and Johnson each pitched an inning in relief.
