Marine girls settle for 2nd in Bay opener

DENMARK, Wis. - Twin Oaks Golf Course has been a stumbling block for Marinette girls' golf, and Monday was no different.
Marinette placed second at the first Bay Conference meet of the season. Denmark held serve with a 193 on its home course to place first, and the Marines shot a 202, 14 strokes ahead of third-place Hortonville.
It's the fifth straight season that Marinette lost to Denmark at Twin Oaks, but the good news is that the Marines came back to win the conference title the past four years.
"I told 'em 'We'll get 'em next time,'" Marinette golf coach Stephanie Haines said.
The biggest surprise of the day might have been that Marinette's top golfer, Abby Dufrane, didn't finish first. Cararina Wurflova, an exchange student from the Czech Republic, fired a 2-over-par 38 to earn medalist honors for Luxemburg-Casco.
Dufrane shot a 39 to place second. A three-putt 6 on the Par 4 ninth left a bad taste in her mouth.
"So she wasn't happy with her score," Haines said. "Abby's going to have some competition this year, which is good for her. You can only push yourself so far."
Lexi Bretl carded a 53 for Marinette's second-best score. Cassie Hilbert shot a 54 and Kayla Thielen fired a 56 to round out Marinette's team score on the tight Twin Oaks layout.
"I think it's a total mental thing," Haines said of her team's high scores. "There's a lot of out-of-bounds."
Liz Lang would just as soon forget about the day she took a 20 on one hole, with four out-of-bounds tee shots. But to her credit, she had a respectable 49 on the other eight holes.
"She bounced back very well," her coach said.
Denmark won because it posted three scores in the 40s.
"It's going to be us and Denmark - that's what it's going to come down to every time, and they have a good team," Haines said.
Abbie Rastall shot a 57 to lead the Marine junior varsity to a second-place finish with a 253 score. Hortonville placed first.
Freshman Kaylee Oscarson impressed her coach with a 62 in her first-ever high school match.
