NEW LONDON, Wis. - The Marinette boys' golf team Friday served notice that it can be one of the top teams in the area.
Marinette won the 13-team New London Memorial Invite. The meet featured a Ryder Cup format, with six holes of best ball, six holes of scramble and six alternate-shot holes.
Each team paired up into three twosomes, and the top two scores were added to determine the team score. Marinette shot a 144 to beat New London by seven strokes on its home course, Shamrock Heights.
Marines Denin Bieberitz and Andy Swanson shot a 1-under-par 69 to earn medalist honors. They were 3-under late in the round, but still finished two shots ahead of New London's Austin Elsner and Sam Porath.
"Yeah, it was nice to walk out of there with first place and the medalists," Marinette coach Cary Waloway said. "I told them on the bus ride, 'you guys, I know we're a good team but if you want to make a statement, today is the day to do it.' And today they did it. It was awesome."
Marines Garrett Waloway and Dakota Langlois finished fourth overall with a 75. Marcus Maguire and Mike Wagner struggled in the alternate-shot portion of the round and finished with a 91.
