WHITE LAKE, Wis. — When the White Lake defense began to crack the Marinette Legion pounced in the season opener for Post 39 Friday.

Marinette broke open the game with a two-out, six-run rally in the fifth inning and cruised to a 12-0 win.

“They started making mistakes and we took advantage,” coach Brian Lesandrini said. “The third time through the order we had a better approach at the plate. We had a lot of clutch hits. We were seeing the ball better and being more patient.”

Marinette’s first four hitters went 7 for 14 and scored nine runs.

Marinette jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Derek Klegin singled and scored on Nate Kallestad’s hit-and-run double. Kallestad scored on an error.

Blake Margis reached on an error in the fourth and scored on two errors on one play to bump the lead to 3-0.

Post 39 brought out the heavy metal during their six-run gamebreaker in the fifth.

After a two-out walk to Klegin, Kallestad, Jake Sawinski and Kiefer Powers laced three straight triples. Margis and Alex Stodola coaxed walks and Margis scooted home on three straight wild pitches.

Klegin drew a walk in the sixth, Kallestad reached on an error, Sawinski ripped his second triple in as many innings and Powers poked an RBI single to cap the Post 39 scoring.

Powers allowed just two hits and two walks and struck out six while earning the complete-game win.

Sawinski, Kallestad and Powers each went 2 for 4 and Klegin scored three runs.
