MARINETTE - An overmatched White Lake team was just the tonic a game-weary Marinette Legion team needed.

Kiefer Powers and Aaron Benson each fired one-hitters in Post 39's 16-1 and 10-1 Fox River Valley Conference North Division sweep at Pedersen Ball Park Wednesday night.

Powers struck out five and overcame five walks while overpowering White Lake in the five-inning opener. Benson whiffed seven and allowed just one walk in the nitecap.

The complete-game efforts by Powers and Benson were just what a Marinette staff stretched thin by 10 games in seven days needed.

Marinette feasted on White Lake pitching for 26 hits in the twin bill, led by Derek Klegin's 5 for 8 binge at the plate.

"The offense certainly carried the load tonight and our pitching was very solid, too" coach Brian Lesandrini said. "Kiefer was a little wild but the defense backed him up."

Post 39 began its heavy-metal show early with a seven-run outburst in the first inning of the opener. Klegin and Scott Eldredge rapped back-to-back singles and Luke Kelly, Benson and Powers drew walks off starter T.J. Kloehn and Klegin and Eldredge got free passes in their second at-bats in the inning. The inning was also fueled by two errors.

Marinette sent nine batters to the plate in a five-run second inning. Benson drilled a one-out double and Bebo ripped a two-out RBI single. Powers laced an RBI triple, Austin Wright scored Powers with a single and Klegin cleared the bases with a double. Eldredge capped the six-hit uprising with a single.

"It's a pretty intense stretch of baseball. We definitely seemed more relaxed tonight. We responded well after (a doubleheader split Tuesday night)," said Lesandrini.

Marinette unloaded more extra-base pop in a four-run third inning. Belonga crushed a triple, Benson followed with a double and Bebo and Klegin followed with singles.

Post 39 bashed out five extra-base hits in the game.

Klegin was 3 for 3 with a pair of RBI, Benson went 2 for 3, scored three runs and jolted two doubles, and Bebo was 2 for 3 with two RBI and scored two runs. Eldredge also had two hits in the opener.

Powers retired nine of the first 10 batters he faced before giving up back-to-back walks to open the fourth inning. Luke Wickstrom foiled his no-hit bid with an RBI single in the fourth.

Benson also took a no-hitter into the fourth inning in the second game before giving up a single to Kloehn.

His teammates backed him up with a 14-hit barrage. Beau DeLaet and Jake McMahon each went 3 for 4 and Belonga drove in three runs.

Marinette jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first on walks to DeLaet and Kelly, an Eldredge single, a walk to Benson and singles by Powers and McMahon.

Klegin, DeLaet and Belonga poked singles in the second to pump the lead to 6-1 and McMahon belted a leadoff double in the third and scored on a double by Wright.

McMahon scorched his second two-bagger of the game, Bebo singled and Marinette took advantage of a walk and an error to pad the lead to 9-1.

Klegin smacked a one-out single in the seventh and scored on DeLaet's double for the final Marinette run.

Marinette closes out a stretch of eight games in the 11 days when it plays host to Oconto Falls tonight at 7:30 p.m.

"You see who's mentally tough. The bodies are tired, the arms are tired, but you have to overcome that," said Lesandrini. "After this stretch of games we'll be able to rest a little."
