Bert had a big smile, generous spirit and was the first to stand and offer his chair when you walked into a room. No stranger to hard work, he was also the first to provide help when you needed it. He had an openness that is so rare; nobody was a stranger to him. Bert found joy in his family, his pup, fishing and detailing long road trips. He lived his life on wheels – from his 18-wheeler to his picnic tables. Stories will be told of his big ideas, many well ahead of their time, and his adventures in entrepreneurship at Hayward’s IGA. We will cherish the memory of his dance routine: bandana on, two thumbs up and a smile a mile wide. Bert always showed up for people in the best of times, the worst of times and everything in between. We are so grateful for the ways he showed us how to live and for the precious time we had with him.
Bert will be hugely missed by his wife of 52 years, Karen (Tessmer) Hayward; children: Michelle Hayward (Jeremy Anderson), Christopher Hayward (Kim Hayward) and Janeen Hayward (Mark Koenig); and grandchildren: Savannah, Logan, Scarlett, Tallulah and Josephine. Bert was born in 1948 to Lois and Dick Hayward of Cedar River, Mich., deceased. He is survived by siblings Carol Conard, Lowell Hayward and Thomas Hayward.
His advice to us always: “Stay happy and healthy.”
Private services held for immediate family due to the pandemic. A celebration of life party will follow at a time to be determined.
