Bertil R. Peterson

Bertil (Bert) Richard Peterson, 94, of Ingalls, passed away at his home of 70 years, on September 24, 2021 surrounded by his loving family. Bert was born on December 23, 1926 in Marquette, Mich., to Rudolph and Ebba Peterson. Bert was a 1944 graduate of Graveraet High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War 2 and attended Northern Michigan University upon discharge.

He met Joyce Hubbard of Stephenson, MI at Northern and they were married June 25, 1949, in the Stephenson United Methodist Church, of which Bert was still a member. They owned and operated Bert’s IGA Market and Locker Plant in Ingalls, Mich. for 40 years before retiring in 1991. Bert and Joyce spent 28 winters in Arizona.

Bert served as Mellen Township Clerk for 20 years and was a past commander of the Stephenson American Legion Post. He was recently awarded a certificate for 70 years membership in the Legion. He also served as Postmaster of Ingalls for 17 years. He earned his private pilot’s license and loved to fly his own Cessna 172 for 28 years.

Bert is survived by 3 sons: Bert, Jr. (Jennifer), Brighton; Kevin (Jill) of Mooresville, N.C.; Kenneth (Melitza) of Hales Corners, Wis. 3 daughters: Christine Spence (Terry) of Norway, Mich.; Carol Stults (Jeff) of Florence, Ore.; and Barbara West of Marinette, Wis.

He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are nieces, great nieces, nephews, and great nephews including special nephew Gail Hubbard of Stephenson, Mich.

Bert was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years; infant son, David; his parents and brothers, Carl and Rudy.

Visitation for Bert will be held on Monday, September 27, 2021, at the Stephenson United Methodist Church from 2 p.m. until time of Funeral Service at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Peggy Paige officiating. Internment will be held with full military honors at Mellen Township Cemetery on Saturday, October 2, 2021, at 11 a.m.
