Doreen Patricia (Tyrrell) Stein

Doreen Patricia (Tyrrell) Stein passed away on Monday, October 19, 2020, following a lengthy illness. She was born on March 11, 1937, in Detroit, Mich.

Doreen was the youngest of three children of Clifford and Edna (Bennett) Tyrrell. She graduated from St. Cecilia High School in 1955, where she lettered in varsity basketball during a time when most women were not allowed to participate in athletics. She worked at the University of Detroit, Burroughs Corporation, and spent several years working and living in Canada. With a passion to serve others, she attended Macomb School of nursing earning her LPN degree in 1972. She went on to graduate from the first RN cohort at Bay de Noc Community College. On October 24, 1959, she married Robert Justin Stein. Together they had eight children. In 1973 they moved to Upper Michigan to raise their family. An avid sports fan, over the years Doreen could regularly be found inside the gymnasium at North Central, supporting the Jets in their many basketball adventures.

Doreen was employed at Pinecrest Medical Care Facility for nearly 40 years, retiring in 2012 as the assistant director of nursing. She was dedicated to serving her community and church, holding positions on a variety of organizations including the school board at North Central Schools, Menominee County Commissioner, Bay de Noc Hospice, Village Board of Powers, NCA Sports Boosters, Foster Grandparent Program, St. Anne Altar Society, CCD teacher and Senior Companion Program. A strong believer in organized labor, she proudly served as union steward for many years of her nursing career. Doreen was active in the Democratic Party, meeting Al Gore in 1992 and Barack Obama in 2010.

Doreen is survived by seven children: Bob, Anne, Dan (Lynnette), Tim (Michelle), Matt, Mary and Jason along with eight grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews as well as her brother: Frank (Barb) Tyrrell and sister: Marilyn Nolan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, in 1977 and her eldest son: Edward, in 2005.

In keeping with her wishes, a funeral mass for Doreen will be held on Thursday, Oct. 22, at 3:30 p.m. (CST) at St. John Neuman Catholic Church in Spalding, Mich. The Upper Peninsula Nurses Honor Guard will have a service at 3:15 p.m. (CST) prior to the Mass. Burial will be in Spalding Twp. Cemetery. Social distancing and mask wearing will be enforced. Due to illness, Doreen spent the last several months in a nursing home, unable to receive visitors due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a nurse she understood the need for this decision though the social isolation was devastating. In her memory, the family requests cards and letters be sent to any resident at Pinecrest Medical Care Facility, Powers, MI, 49874, to alleviate their loneliness.

In lieu of flowers, Doreen would want you to use your resources to ensure candidates up and down the ticket are elected to office who support science, education and universal health care.
