Dr. Richard R. Chaltry of Menominee, Mich., passed away unexpectedly in his sleep on Feb. 16, 2021. He was born in Menominee on March 8, 1938.
Richard graduated from Menominee High School in 1956. He attended Michigan State University where he participated in ROTC and graduated with a degree in chemistry and education. Richard taught high school chemistry. He graduated from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1968. Richard financed his college education by working at Lloyd Flanders, bartending and working for the railroad. He married Darleen Parrett on June 10, 1961. They raised seven children. Richard’s work experience included: Starting a family medical practice in the late 1960s, working at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marinette General Hospital, St. Francis Hospital as an ER doctor, Pinecrest Medical Care Facility and Aspirus Ontonagon Hospital and Long Term Care as the Medical Director. Richard delivered over 350 babies in his career. He served families from birth to geriatrics. Richard was an avid pilot and active member of Civil Air Patrol. He also enjoyed boating, automobiles and playing cribbage. He enjoyed traveling in Europe and taught himself how to speak and read German. He was one of the first people to go into East Berlin and Czech Republic when the Wall fell. He had a beautiful voice and enjoyed singing in the church choir.
Richard is survived by his former wife, Darleen Riegert; friend, Rick Andrews; a sister, Jean Matters; and partner, Tom Curski; his children: Mary (Anthony) Ash, Rick (Libby) Chaltry, Ann (Patrick) Gaylord, Heidi (Matt) Vieceli, Felix (Lori) Chaltry and Tim (Leah) Chaltry; his 15 grandchildren: Sarah Evenson, Erin and Alex Ash, Emily, Jennifer and Thomas Chaltry, Andrew Gaylord, Lilly and Gia Vieceli, Jillian, Juliet, Violet, Xavior Chaltry, Will Chaltry and Ava Lundberg; two great-grandchildren: Jack and Alder Evenson; and a son-in-law, Jim Lundberg. Richard was preceded in death by his parents: William and Irene (Gruber) Chaltry; his brothers: John, Bill, Adrian and Larry; also by daughter-in-law, Donna Chaltry; and daughter, Amy Elizabeth Lundberg.
Visitation will be held at Hansen-Onion-Martell Funeral Home in Marinette from noon until 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2021. A Christian burial is planned for the spring at Holy Redeemer Parish with interment in Birch Creek Cemetery.
