Avis A. Nelson, 88, of Marinette, Wis., passed away Wednesday, July 15, 2020, at Aurora Medical Center-Bay Area. She was born March 8, 1932, in Peshtigo to Arthur and Ruth Olson.
Avis spent her early life in Peshtigo and graduated from Peshtigo High School with the Class of 1950. She married Arthur G. “Sonny” Nelson of Marinette on June 29, 1951. Art was serving with the U.S. Navy at Norfolk, Va., where they briefly resided before returning to Marinette and together raising their three daughters. Avis devoted most of her time to being a homemaker and caring for her family. In the 1960s she worked for the local Selective Service Board and later at the tourist information office on Stephenson Island. She enjoyed holding garage sales and traveling around the community attending others. In later years, she most loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Avis is survived by three daughters: Amber (Gary) Lynwood, Dawn Nelson and Kelly Polzin; five grandchildren: Tina (Ron) Peterson, Dustin Hafeman, Ashley Polzin, Sean Hafeman and Ryan Polzin; five great-grandchildren: Kasi (Adam) Stankevich, Brookelyn Peterson, Jaxson Conlan, Ava Polzin and Raegan Wilsmann; one great-great grandson, Nolan Stankevich, with two more great-greats on the way; and one sister, Adele Wienke. Her husband, Arthur Nelson, preceded her in death on Jan. 5, 2010.
Due to current public health concerns, no service will be held at this time.
Private interment will be made in Forest Home Cemetery in Marinette.
