Gerald “Jerry” F. Johnson, 73, of Porterfield, Wis., passed away on Thursday, July 16, 2020, at home. He was born on Feb. 28, 1947, to the late Francis and Edna (Hilsabeck) Johnson in Marinette, Wis., and graduated from Marinette High School in 1966.
Jerry served his country in the Army during Vietnam (1966 and 1970) as a Huey helicopter door gunner and was awarded the Bronze Star and Air Medal and two time Purple Heart recipient. He also spent some time in Germany and Fort Knox, Ky. Following service, he moved back to the area for a while working various jobs and then moved to Hawaii to work as a logistics tech on base for the Navy until retirement in 2002. Jerry then moved back to the area and enjoyed attending the Menekaunee Old Timers Picnics. He loved talking with people and seemed to never meet a stranger. He had a great sense of humor. Jerry was a supporter of the Vietnam Veterans, the DAV and the Wounded Warrior Project.
Jerry is survived by three brothers: Tom (Cindy) Johnson of Peshtigo, Wis., Tony (Anna) Johnson of Yorktown, Va., and Mike (Nanette) Johnson of Fort Mill, S.C.; a sister, Marilu (Al) Kuffel of Marinette; aunt, Fern Brabender; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, Terry.
Per Jerry’s wishes, no services will be held.
