Robert “Bob” Liberty, 95, of Menominee, Mich., passed away on Friday, July 3, 2020, at Aurora Medical Center - Bay Area. Bob was born on Aug. 8, 1924, in L’Anse, Mich., to the late Percy and Bernadette (Raymond) Liberty.
Bob attended L’Anse School and graduated in May of 1943. Bob enlisted in the Navy while still in high school. He served in the South Pacific on the Tingey Destroyer 3rd and 7th fleet from 1943 until 1946. Bob then attended Northern Michigan University receiving a degree in education. He started teaching in Peck, Mich., for 13 years and then became principal and coached football, baseball and basketball. Bob received his master’s degree from the University of Michigan. He married the former Helen English at St. Johns in Peck in August of 1952. They had two children: Beth Conant and Steven Liberty. In 1964, Bob and his family moved to Marquette where he was involved at Northern Michigan University on a year program for high school dropouts. In 1965 he worked for the Marquette Catholic Diocese as director of community affairs. In 1969, Bob moved to Menominee as vice principal and vocational director at Menominee High School. In 1982, he retired and Interfaith Manor was built. He, along with his wife Helen, co-managed Interfaith Manor for 15 years. After retiring, Bob and Helen enjoyed spending the winters in Zephyrhills, Fla., and summers at home in Menominee. Bob enjoyed golfing, playing cards, dining out, concerts at Busch Gardens and visiting with friends and family. Bob further enjoyed hunting and fishing over the years. He was a member of the American Legion and Retired Teachers. Bob was a past member of North Shore Golf Club and the Golden K. For 15 years, he walked two miles every day treating all dogs on his route and meeting several new friends in both Menominee and Florida. Bob was an avid Menominee Maroons and Green Bay Packer fan. He loved telling Finnish jokes and other stories.
Survivors include his loving wife of over 67 years Helen; his daughter, Beth Conant; son, Steven; six grandchildren: Chelsea (Jason Holt), Tricia, Bobby, Erin, Leigh and Shawn; and eight great-grandchildren including: Makenna, Tyler, Caden, Everett, Camille, Dylan, AJ and Lance. In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his sister, Margaret Schneider; two sisters-in-law, three brothers-in-law, and his son-in-law, Scott Conant.
