Wilma Marie Smith, 89, of Menominee, Mich., passed away on Sunday, Sept. 20, 2020, at Aurora Bay Care Medical Center in Green Bay, Wis. Wilma was born on June 25, 1931, in McMillan, Mich., to the late Anthony and Gertrude (Haney) Hoody.
Wilma married “the love her life,” Raymond L. Smith, in Newberry, Mich., on Oct. 26, 1949. They resided in Grand Marais, Mich., and ran their lumber and trucking business Raymond L. Smith & Sons until he preceded her in death on Nov. 6, 1981. She was known to many as the “Roadrunner” which was her CB radio handle. Wilma felt strongly about community service. She was the radio attendant for the Grand Marais Airport. Wilma delivered meals on wheels, enjoyed volunteering at the school as hall monitor and served as the locker room mom for school sporting events. In her later years after she moved to Menominee, she enjoyed planting flowers, watching hummingbirds and listening to Josh Kellner broadcast Menominee Maroon sports. Most importantly, Wilma was a wonderful mother and grandmother.
Survivors include her six children: Leon (Tammy) Smith of Anchorage, Alaska, Frederick (Kathy Butler) Smith of Norway, Mich., Clifford (Peggy) Smith of Peshtigo, Wis., Loretta Conklin of Marinette, Wis., Donald (Cindy) Smith of Menominee, and Kay (Brian) Monroe of Menominee; 12 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Wilma was preceded in death by her brother and sister-in-law: Frederick and Helen Hoody; and daughter-in-law, Carol Smith.
A graveside service for Wilma will be held at the Rosehill Cemetery in Grand Marais, on Sunday, Sept. 27, 2020, at 1 p.m. EST, with Pastor John Babit presiding.
