OCONTO—Self-described political outsider Elijah Behnke, R-Oconto, said he is humbled following his victory Tuesday over Karl Jaeger, a Democrat from Marinette, in the 89th district Assembly race.
“Words cannot describe how happy I am to have the trust and support of so many people in the 89th district,” Behnke said in a prepared statement. “I am not a politician and never wanted to be. I wanted to make sure that our small business community and our traditional values are protected. This is a tremendous honor and I promise to work hard every day. It is time to get to work.”
Behnke recorded 63% of the vote in his win over Jaeger.
Behnke was born and raised in the 89th Assembly district. They district covers parts of Brown, Marinette and Oconto counties. Behnke replaces John Nygren, a Marinette Republican who was re-elected to the seat in November, but resigned in December to work in the private sector.
