The Republican field for the 89th District Assembly race will be trimmed after today’s primary election.

Five Republicans are trying to win the right to advance to the April 6 spring election. The candidates are: Elijah Behnke, Oconto; Debbie Jacques, Green Bay; David Kamps, Coleman; Mike Kunesh, Marinette; and Michael Schneider, Suamico.

The winner will face Democrat Karl Jaeger.

The 89th District includes portions of Marinette, Brown and Oconto counties.

Veteran John Nygren, a Republican from Marinette, easily won the seat in November, but he resigned to join the private sector.

There also is a primary in the Town of Peshtigo as Supervisor 2 Jon Drees is being challenged by Lenard Wiedemeieder and Thomas Gromala.

Statewide, there is a race for State Superintendent of Public Instruction. Candidates are Sheila Briggs, Joe Fenrick, Troy Gunderson, Shandowlyon Hendricks-Williams, Deborah Kerr, Steve Krull and Jill Underly. Incumbent Carolyn Stanford Taylor is not seeking re-election.
