“I was intrigued by the solid defeat the Menominee School District sustained on Aug. 3. The school board had too much ambition in soaking taxpayers during a recession. People laid off. Overtime hours cut or reduced. Small business is hurting. City and county governments increasing property taxes. County road and city streets in decay and no funds to fix them.
“The school board failed miserably in explaining all the details of their asking price. Why did the board attempt to hide the fact Walton Blesch is doomed for the wrecking ball? The board mentioned something about converting Blesch Elementary into apartments. Is the board getting into the real estate business? Apartments mean the end of locker rooms for home teams and visiting teams. Apartments mean private property and no more public access. Apartments mean no more Walton Blesch Field, a 103-year-old community landmark.
