GREEN BAY—The Peshtigo boys basketball team kept its winning streak rolling on the road against NEW Lutheran on Monday as the Bulldogs held the Blazers to two points over the final eight minutes of play to wipe out a five-point deficit and take home a 61-49 Packerland Conference win.

Trailing 47-42 with just under nine minutes to play, Peshtigo’s Muaz Salem scored a transition layup and Adam Bauman followed up with a three-point play assisted by Salem. Bauman made the free throw to tie the game at 47 which forced NEW Lutheran into a timeout with 6:51 left in the game.

Just over a minute after the timeout, Landon Lemke was fouled in the paint and swished home both free throws to give Peshtigo a 49-47 lead and that was the score until Lemke drove baseline for a layup two minutes later to take a 51-47 advantage.

Another basket from Lemke bumped the lead to 53-47 and Peshtigo’s 11-0 run was finally ended when the Blazers scored a bucket inside and quickly took a timeout to stop the clock with 49 ticks remaining.

Free throws have been a thorn in the Bulldogs’ side all season long, but with the game on the line Peshtigo’s defense was able to hold strong and the Bulldogs sank 6-of-6 free throws (Lemke 4-4, Salem 2-2) over the final 49 seconds to seal the win.

The first half stayed close throughout, with Peshtigo taking the biggest lead (six points) after a triple from Mason Doberstein to make it a 15-9 game. NEW Lutheran answered with a triple of its own and the two teams traded baskets for a while until there was a stoppage in play after the Blazers’ Marshal Bukowski scored his 1,000th career point with 6:29 left in the first half with the score at 19-16 in favor of Peshtigo.

Shortly after, Peshtigo grabbed a 25-22 lead on a basket inside from Salem with under two minutes to play in the half, but the Blazers ended the final 1:25 on a 9-2 run to hold a 31-27 lead at the break.

As a team, Peshtigo held NEW Lutheran to 19-of-61 (31 percent) shooting and 3-24 (12 percent) from 3-point land while going 6-20 (30 percent) on three’s and 21-47 (44 percent) from the field. The biggest difference in this game from previous ones for the Bulldogs, however, was their free throw shooting where the team went 13-15 (86 percent).

Lemke scored a season-high 27 points (9-18 shooting, 7-7 FTs) to lead Peshtigo while Bauman added 15 points and six assists. For the Blazers, Elijah Lange had 13 points and Elijah Meerstein added 12. NEW’s 1,000-point scorer—Bukowski—was held to 2-17 from the floor for eight points.
