WAUKESHA, Wis. — The 2020 season ended on a high note for the Marinette swim team at the WIAA Division 2 State Finals in Waukesha on Friday.

Making her second consecutive appearance at state, senior Maija Carriveau stepped up the podium twice after finishing second in the 50 freestyle with a personal-best time of 24.32 while placing sixth in the 100 freestyle by swimming another personal-best of 53.98.

Fellow senior Allie Mayhew, also competing at state for the second straight year, captured eighth place in the 100 backstroke after an impressive 1:00.67 swim on the stopwatch.

Both swimmers improved upon their performances from last year’s finals, with Carriveau trimming 0.62 seconds from her 50fFreestyle and Mayhew shaving a huge 3:30 off her time in the 100 backstroke.

Mayhew and Carriveau also teamed up with freshmen Riley Sabel and Mary Mayhew to swim a sub-4:00 time in the 400 freestyle relay, taking home 15th with a 3:56.63.

Overall Marinette finished with a team score of 45 to finish 18th out of 28 total schools. Rhinelander won the Division 2 state championship with a score of 255 while Shorewood (228) finished second and Greendale (202) was third.

“I’m so proud of all the accomplishments these girls have made,” Marinette head coach Calista Thill said. “The meet was an awesome ways to end 2020 and it’s an emotional end to the season with Allie and Maija graduating. It was a fun season for all the uncertainty that came with it and as I say to the girls, 2020 has got nothing on us. I can’t wait to see what Mary and Riley can bring to the pool next year.”
