MARINETTE — The Marinette Marines defense pitched a second-half shutout while touchdowns from Jameion Cross and Adam Lemery helped the Marines overcome a 14-point deficit to notch their first victory of the season in Thursday’s no-conference game against the Peshtigo Bulldogs at Higley Stadium.
Peshtigo took an early 6-0 lead thanks to a 69-yard scoring scamper by Darius Sechen before Marinette tied matters up with a 1-yard touchdown run by Cross. Another score by Sechen, this time from four yards out, put the Bulldogs ahead 12-6 at the end of the first quarter.
After building a 20-6 halftime lead behind a 2-yard quarterback sneak by Will Boettcher, the Bulldogs were held scoreless throughout the entire second half, as the Marines used a 4-yard score from Cross and a successful 2-point conversion by Darik McMahon to cut their deficit to six at the 8:30 mark of the third quarter.
The Marines’ defense forced a three-and-out in the fourth quarter to give Marinette possession at the Bulldog’s 37-yard line with 5:47 left to play. Marinette cashed in seven plays later on a 10-yard score from Lemery while Cale Ducane knocked down the PAT kick to push the Marines up by one with 3:33 remaining. An interception by Brett Whiting snuffed out Peshtigo’s final drive and allowed Marinette to kneel down twice to secure its first victory in over a year.
