MARINETTE — The season did not begin on a high note for the Marinette girls basketball team, who dropped Tuesday’s season opening tilt to North Eastern Conference rival Fox Valley Lutheran by a 53-30 score.

Sloppy play in the first half put the Marines at a 28-10 disadvantage at halftime before Marinette regrouped in the second half, only being outscored by five points, but it was too little, too late for the Marines offense. A late 5-0 run allowed the Foxes to snuff out any chance of a Marine rally and preserved the victory for FVL.

Sam Pieper was Marinette’s top scorer with 13 points while Hannah Chenier added five, Ali Kacalo and Matti Renikow each chipped in four, and Amara Smalls and Jordan Boettcher both scored two.

A full story on Tuesday’s game will be in Friday’s edition of the EagleHerald.
