OCONTO FALLS, Wis. — An ever-improving Marinette cross country team saw its biggest success yet on Friday, as the girls team sprinted their way to the first Marinette first-place finish of the young season at the Oconto Falls Triangular meet.

The Marines had five girls finish in the top ten at Oconto Falls, a course that Marinette had never competed on and that’s known for long, gradual inclines as well as a few sharp turns. The girls scored a 34, narrowly edging out Little Chute (39) and well ahead of host-school Oconto Falls (51).

With only three runners, the boys team’s score was considered “incomplete” and did not allow them to place, but they were still able to place a runner in the top-ten. Little Chute was first with a score of 18 while Oconto Falls finished second with a 45.

Grace Jones continued to establish herself as the Marines’ top runner by finishing second with a time of 22 minutes, 10 seconds, shaving 34 seconds off her previous time at the Freedom Invitational. Sam Pieper continued her ascent as well, nabbing a fifth-place finish by running a 23:48 and trimming 29 seconds off her prior best time of the season.

Molly Knutson (24:06) continued Marinette’s string of success at Oconto Falls by taking home eighth place while Hadley Reines was right behind her in ninth (24:10). Ava Dahlman crossed the finish line in 24:28 to wrap up tenth-place and secure Marinette’s first-place finish.

Maya Carivou saw a slight dip in her time from the Marines’ previous team, but still finished strong with a time of 25:06 that was good for 12th place. Karissa Valitchka (28:43) ended her day in 20th to wrap things up for the Marine girls.

On the boys side, Ryan Demmith blazed a time of 19:13 to finish seventh, his first top-ten finish of the year. Alec Queever (20:15) finished 12th for the second consecutive meet and Rodney Holler came in 21st with a time of 27:15.

With one victory on the course under their belts, the Marines will return to Oconto Falls on Friday. The meet begins at 4 p.m.
