MANISTIQUE, Mich.—One year after surprising first-round exit in the MHSAA girls basketball Division 2 District opener, the Menominee Maroons left no doubt that this postseason would be different with a 67-12 blowout victory over Manistique in the Division 3 District 66 opener on Wednesday.

All season long, the Maroons’ calling card has been their stifling defense and that trend continued against Manistique, with Menominee notching 20 steals while holding the Emeralds to single-digit scoring totals in all four quarters.

Emma Anderson poured in 22 points along with five rebounds, three steals and two blocks to lead the Maroons in scoring in a game where Manistique was held scoreless in the first quarter before finding itself in a huge 21-5 hole at halftime.

Menominee controlled the third quarter, outscoring the Emeralds by a 21-1 margin before giving up just six points in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.

Backing up Anderson was Erin Barrette with 15 points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists while Jenna Nolde chipped in seven points and seven steals.

The Maroons will take on West Iron County in tonight’s semifinal round. Menominee got the better of WIC 63-37 on March 2 and another triumph would punch the Maroons’ ticket to the Division 3, District 66 championship game.

Tonight’s game tips off at 6 p.m.
