CRIVITZ—Saint Thomas Aquinas Academy freshman Kaden Bailey one a one-hole playoff to punch his ticket to the WIAA boys golf state tournament at Hunter’s Glen Golf Club on Tuesday.
With the Cavaliers competing in the WIAA Sectionals, Bailey birdied the par-four hole to edge out Manawa’s Peyton Schuelke and Christian Johnson of Wisconsin Valley Lutheran to finish with a low-round score of 79.
“Kaiden was pretty consistent most of the day. He battled through some extreme heat to put himself at the top of the leader board after 18 holes,” STAA coach George Hayes said.” He was outstanding in the playoff round. His approach shot was really solid, as he had to hit out of some longer grass. He put himself into position to birdie the hole and he did. Kaiden is very competitive and always seems ready to meet the challenge.”
While Bailey will be making the trip to state, his Cavalier teammates will not, as only the top-two teams and top-three individuals qualified.
STAA’s combined score of 440 put the Cavaliers in 11th place, eight strokes better than 12th-place Crivitz (448). Marathon shot a 343 to finish first while Newman Catholic (345) was second, earning both schools a trip to the state tournament.
Coleman came in fifth with a score of 374, Oconto was seventh after shooting 385 and Lena was ninth with a 403.
Powers backed up Bailey with a 91 while Theron Thayer finished with a 103. Blake DeDamos (167) and Dominic Piasecki (208) rounded things out for the Cavaliers.
“I was pleased with the way Alex played today. He came on really strong over the last few weeks of the season,” Hayes said. “Theron had another solid round of golf. He shows really good poise for a freshman. It will be fun to see how he improves on his game for next season.”
Oconto’s Will Sherman finished ninth overall after shooting an 84, while Coleman’s Karson Casper shot an 85 to tie Noah Gage of Marathon for 11th place.
Kamron Kostrova (93) edged Dylan Marquardt (95), with Ember DeWitt shooting a 101 and Liam Zeitler carding a 106 for the Cougars.
The Wolverines were led by a score of 100 by Joey Pickett, while Maisen Eiting finished his day with a 108). TJ Mueller shot a 113, Jack Bauer tallied a 127 and Kolby Gilliam finished with a score of 141.
Braden McVane and Mason Simonson tied each other with a 92 to lead the Wildcats, with Evan VanderZanden shooting a 109 and KC Miller (110) nipping at his heels.
The Blue Devils’ Christian Koch shot a 90 to find himself in a five-way tie for 16th place, while Josh Maynard (98), Josh Delzer (113) and David Westenberg (122) wrapping up the day for Oconto.
