SHAWANO, Wis. — A big game from Brett Whiting couldn't lift the Marinette Marines to their first win of the season as back-to-back turnovers in the first quarter helped Shawano build an early lead that Marinette couldn't overcome in a 48-27 loss on Friday.

Whiting tallied 121 yards on the ground along with three touchdowns to power the Marines' offense while Adam Lemery chipped in 102 yards on 20 carries as Marinette (0-4) racked up over 250 rushing yards against the Hawks (3-1).

The Marines opened the game red-hot on offense with a five play, 63-yard scoring drive that Whiting capped off with a 25-yard touchdown run off a misdirection scamper up the middle of the Hawks' defense. A successful PAT kick gave Marinette a 7-0 advantage for its first lead of the season.

The lead would not stand for long as Elliot Lowney fielded the ensuing Marines' kickoff at the 15-yard line and weaved his way up field for an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown that knotted things up at 7-7.

After an interception by Lemery the Hawks set up shop with a 1st down and 10 at their own 33-yard line and needed one play to take the lead after Gage Timm connected with Elliot Lowney for a 66-yard scoring strike. The Marines fumbled the ensuing kickoff and allowed the Hawks to drive 37 yards in six plays and score off a 1-yard touchdown by Kaleb Lowney, pushing Shawano's lead to 12.

Marinette answered back at the 7:11 mark in the second quarter with Whiting taking the handoff on a misdirection reverse and finding paydirt with a 22-yard touchdown run. A blocked PAT attempt made the score 19-13.

With the score 27-13 Marinette attempted to mount a drive as the final minutes of the first half ticked away but turned the ball over on downs after an incomplete pass by Lemery to set Shawano up with a 1st and 10 at the Marines' 43-yard line. Four plays later Timm threaded the needled between two Marinette defenders for a 33-yard touchdown pass to Eilliot Lowney. A successful PAT made the score 34-13 at halftime.

The Hawks received the ball to begin the second half and immediately marched down the field with a six play, 51-yard scoring that Kaleb Lowney finished off with a 9-yard rushing touchdown to give Shawano a 40-13 advantage.

Marinette needed just one play to respond as Whiting scored his third touchdown of the day on a 67-yard yard that cut the Marine's deficit to 21 as the third quarter came to a close. The Marines stayed on the attack to open the fourth quarter with an 11-play drive capped off with a 2-yard touchdown run by Lemery. Jameion Cross powered in the 2-point conversion run to pull Marinette within 13.

Not content to milk the clock, the Hawks got into Marine territory after a big first down run by Kaleb Lowney and Timm finished the job with a 30-yard touchdown run. After a successful 2-point conversion Shawano led 48-27 which would hold until the final whistle.
