MARINETTE—The winds of conference realignment could soon blow the Marinette Marines football team to a new home.
The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) Conference Realignment Task Force Committee has advanced a proposal by Marinette to realign the Marines with a new conference in football only.
If realignment were approved, Marinette would leave the North Eastern Conference, its home since the 2015 season, for the Packerland Conference. Clintonville would also be on the move, shifting from the Packerland to the Northwoods Conference, while Fox Valley Lutheran would migrate from the Bay Conference to take Marinette’s place in the NEC.
Should the WIAA Board of Control greenlight Marinette’s proposal, the Packerland Conference would feature the Marines along with Peshtigo, Oconto, Sturgeon Bay, Kewaunee, Southern Door, Bonduel and Mishicot. The Northwoods Conference would house the Truckers in addition to Coleman, Crivitz, Oconto Falls, Northland Pines, Tomahawk, Menominee Indian and Crandon.
Realignment would also affect the football teams of Lena/Saint Thomas Aquinas, as the Titans would move to the eight-player Peninsula Conference along with Suring, Wausaukee, Gillett, Algoma, Gibraltar, Sevastopol and Green Bay N.E.W Lutheran-Oneida-Providence Academy.
Also on the move if the proposal passes would be Niagara, with the Badgers taking up residence in the eight-player Northern Border Conference with Goodman-Pembine, Wabeno-Laona, Three Lakes-Phelps, Elcho-White Lake and Florence.
The Board of Control will give final consideration and vote on the proposed plan on March 5.
